What We’re Really Teaching at Geelong Boxing Club: Beyond The Punches

Jun 04, 2025

Dear Parents,

We wanted to take a moment to give you a clearer window into exactly what we’re focusing on in our programs right now because what happens inside these sessions goes far beyond throwing punches.

At Geelong Boxing Club, every class is built around two equally important pillars:

1️⃣ Nervous System Support
2️⃣ Boxing Skill Development

And while boxing is the tool, what we’re really building is regulation, resilience, and coachability.

✅ Nervous System Support: Why This Comes First
A huge part of why we do what we do is because many kids and teens today are constantly running with overloaded nervous systems.

👉 School pressures.
👉 Social dynamics.
👉 Emotional overwhelm.
👉 Screens, comparisons, constant input.

When they walk into the gym, our first job is to meet their system where it’s at.

That’s why they experience:

Structured, rhythm based drills

Movement patterns that promote regulation

Breathwork embedded into skill practice

Predictable routines that settle the system

Coaches modelling calm, clear, respectful leadership

When their body feels safe they’re able to learn, to listen, and to grow.

✅ Boxing Skill Development: More Than Just Hitting Pads
Boxing skill is not about being the toughest or the fastest, it’s about:

Coachability: the ability to receive feedback, listen, adjust, and take instruction.

Collaboration: being able to work safely with a partner, respecting boundaries and communication.

Discipline: showing up consistently and working on fundamentals, even when it’s not exciting.

Focus: learning to hold attention, follow multi-step instructions, and stay present.

We are NOT here trying to build competitive fighters.
We are building young people who know how to handle challenge, pressure, and feedback in a healthy way.

🔎 What This Looks Like Across Our Age Groups
5-8 Year Olds:
At this stage, it’s all about:

Feeling safe and successful

Building trust with coaches

Learning basic movement patterns

Introducing simple combinations through games and repetition

Developing confidence in their body

Our focus is on settling energy while keeping them engaged and connected.

9-12 Year Olds:
Now we begin to introduce:

More structured drills

Consistent partner work

Early coachability including how to listen, take direction, and apply feedback

Emotional regulation during mistakes, frustration, and challenges

Safe collaboration with peers

We start teaching them how to work as part of a community, not just "do their own thing."

Teens:
For our older group, we lean into:

High level skill refinement

Personal accountability

More complex combinations & technical work

Real conversations around resilience, ownership, and self-regulation

Managing emotions under physical and mental load

This is where we’re not just coaching boxing, we’re coaching life skills that carry far outside the gym.

⚠ Why This Matters
There are plenty of programs that just burn energy or teach kids how to punch.

What we’re doing here is different and intentionally so.

We’re helping your child build the skills to regulate themselves, listen to feedback, work with others, and rise to challenges all inside a safe, trauma informed environment that honours where each young person is at developmentally.

💬 Growing Our Community
We are not a commercial gym trying to fill every slot. We’ve built this as a community first space where every young person is known, supported and challenged appropriately.

If you know another child, teen or family who could benefit from this kind of support please feel free to send them our way. Many of our most engaged members have come from word of mouth referrals, and we’re always open to welcoming young people who are ready for this kind of work.

You can simply have them reach out to us directly at [email protected] or speak to us at the gym.

We appreciate you being part of what we’re building here.
