Most teenage girls are carrying more than they let on. School, friendships, group chats, a body that's changing faster than anyone warned her about. A lot of it has nowhere to go.

Boxing gives it somewhere to go.

Over four Thursday evenings your daughter will learn to hit pads and bags properly, get fitter and stronger, and pick up a few simple ways to settle herself when things feel like too much. Nobody lectures her about it. She learns it in her body, while she's moving, from a coach who knows what girls this age are dealing with.

What she'll do

  • Bag work and pad work, with real technique from the first session
  • Strength and fitness work that's hard enough to feel good, never punishing
  • Breath and body tools for coming back down after a big feeling, the kind she can use in a maths exam or after a fight with a friend
  • Drills for coordination and focus that get her out of her head
  • Practice at taking up space, using her voice and backing herself

What she won't do

  • Spar, fight or get hit. There is zero contact. Every session is bags, pads and movement.
  • Get compared to anyone, called out or pushed to perform
  • Be asked to talk about anything personal

She doesn't need to have boxed before and she doesn't need to be sporty. If she's already had a go, there's plenty to push her too.

Who's running it

Lena Moxon co-owns Geelong Boxing Club and has spent more than eighteen years working with young people in schools, youth centres and community programs around Geelong.

She's a qualified teacher with a Postgraduate Certificate in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. In 2026, her group programs for teens won the ASPIRE Social Prescribing Award.

So every drill, every pairing and every cool down is planned by someone who understands how teenage girls tick, and how to keep the room safe enough that they'll actually have a go.

Parents wait outside

Drop her off, then head out. Parents and carers wait outside the gym for the whole session. Sit in the car, grab a coffee, go for a walk. Just not inside.

There's a reason for this. Teenage girls hold back when a parent is watching, even a parent they love. Without an audience they get louder, try harder and stop worrying about how they look. That's where the good stuff happens.

Lena keeps the group small so she can coach every girl properly and get to know her by name in week one. When it's full, it's full. 12 spaces only.

FAQ

Does she need any boxing experience?

No. Most girls who come have never put on a glove. Lena starts from the basics and builds from there, and girls with some experience get pushed further.

Will anyone hit her?

No. There's no sparring and no contact of any kind. Girls hit bags and pads held by Lena, and sometimes by each other with pads in a controlled drill.

Why can't I stay and watch?

Because she'll hold back if you're there, even if she'd never say so. Parents and carers wait outside for the full 45 minutes. Walk her to the door at 5:10pm, check in with Lena, and be back at 6:00pm.

Is this therapy?

No. It's a boxing program designed by someone with adolescent mental health training. Nobody is asked to share anything personal. The emotional tools are taught through movement and breath, not talking.

My daughter gets anxious or has additional needs. Is she OK to come?

Very likely, yes. Tell us in the registration form, or email [email protected] before the first session, and Lena will talk it through with you so she knows how to set your daughter up.

What should she wear and bring?

Clothes she can move in, sneakers, a water bottle and a hair tie if she needs one. Gloves and wraps are supplied.

What if she misses a week?

She can come to the rest of the sessions. Missed sessions aren't refunded or made up, because the group is small and the spot is held for her.

Can she come with a friend?

Yes, and plenty of girls do. Each girl needs her own registration, so book both before the spots go.
